Durrell Bishop

Durrell Bishop is interviewed in Chapter 8 – Multisensory and Multimedia. His passion for adding physical objects to the interface relates closely to the work of Hiroshi Ishii, and his whimsical sense of humor relates to projects from Bill Gaver and Dunne and Raby.

Durrell studied industrial design in London, and after a period of freelance design and photography, joined IDEO. In 1991 he returned to the Royal College of Art in London for a master’s in interaction design and stayed on to continue research at RCA and with Interval Research in California. Later he designed games with Dancing Dog and then set up “itch” in partnership with Andrew Hirniak. After another spell with IDEO in London, Durrell branched out on his own again in 2004, helping his clients get the most out of highly interactive products and media. He wants to design objects that are self evident, whether they are physical or virtual.

Durrell points out that coins and banknotes are abstract representations of value, and suggests that physical tags can be designed to represent any abstract item, as long as we can remember what they mean by recognizing their form and behavior.
